Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and is believed to have attained Moksha here. Even more remarkable than the temple, is its location on a steep cliff 70 metres above the roaring Indian Ocean. There are more steep headlands on either side and sunsets over Uluwatu are a sight-to-behold. Visitors are advised to respect local customs and dress modestly for this part of the tour. Bali Temple Etiquette requires both men and women to wear clothing that covers their shoulders, upper arms and legs completely. Sarongs and Sashes are available free at the entrance of Uluwatu Temple for this purpose.
