One of the first sights that you visit on this tour is the Panathenaic Stadium or Panathinaiko, the birthplace and cradle of the world-renowned Olympic Games! The first Olympic Games were held here in 1896. As you proceed on the tour, you drive past several historic Athens landmarks such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Parliament House on Constitution Square and the Royal Palace that has served as a Presidential Mansion since the abolishment of the country’s monarchy in 1974.
Continuing the tour, you come upon the National Garden, a 15.5-hectare oasis in the heart of the city renowned for its ruins, busts, Corinthian capitals of columns and mosaics and other features. Designed by the First Queen of Greece, the National Garden was initially known as the Royal Garden. Right opposite the garden is the Hadrian’s Arch, a marble arch dating back to 131 AD that leads to the 129 AD Temple of Olympian Zeus.
The tour continues to the Acropolis of Athens, or simply Acropolis, an ancient citadel perched atop a rocky outcrop on the outskirts of Athens. These ruins are one of the most important attractions in the world and are considered by historians as well as renowned engineers and architects as one of the finest architectural and historical structures from Greek Antiquity. A collection of monuments, the Acropolis is especially renowned for Propylaea, Temple of Athena Nike, Parthenon and Erechtheion.
After the tour ends, return to your Athens hotel. In the evening, enjoy a stroll through the ancient Plaka Area, an ancient neighbourhood in Athens that has been inhabited since antiquity, with several architectural and historical landmarks standing testimony to its age. End the day with an Optional Dinner in a Greek Folk Tavern with Traditional Greek Music and Live Show.
