Central Market and Night Market in Phnom Penh Guide:
Some of the best experiences of a culture is usually hidden away in alleys and the shopping districts, where you can watch the locals come and go, bargain and shop for stuff; enjoy savoury snacks and refreshing drinks; browse for souvenirs, both the standard ones and unusual ones; and simply revel in the ambience.
The Central Market in Phnom Penh is one such place. Housed in an art deco building that is shaped like a dome with four arms that transform into hallways lined with shops, shops and more shops containing everything under the sun, including food, textiles, apparels, jewellery, accessories, footwear, electronics and technology, the Central Market offers an amazing shopping and people-watching experience right in the heart of the city.
Its only drawback is that it closes early – by 5.00 PM itself, but it opens early in the morning. Alternatively, you can enjoy shopping under the star-strewn velvety skies at the Night Market, a night market along the riverfront with a lavish spread of wares of all kinds. The Night Market is conducted only on the weekends.
