Perth Mint Tour Guide:
Perth Mint, an actual Gold Mint owned by the Western Australian Government, is now open to tourists! Visit an actual mint and enjoy a thorough tour for a glimpse into its workings, go behind-the-scenes, learn more on how raw gold is processed, refined, melted and then worked into different shapes and sizes – all in a real working mint with origins dating back to the colonial British Royal Mint.
One of the few mints to continue operating from its original premises, the Perth Mint is as much a historical landmark as a mint. Explore it to its very depths with a guided tour; held hourly, the guided tours lead you on a journey through the Grand heritage building, the heavily secured vault and the original melting house, where refining of gold over the years has resulted in gold dust getting embedded in the walls itself.
Watch in awe as the workers melt gold, refine it and then pour the molten gold in its purest form to create solid gold bars; explore the vaults, which house the world’s largest collection of investment gold bars in myriad shapes, sizes and designs, the largest collection of natural gold nuggets in the world and the Australian Kangaroo Gold. At 50 million USD, this 80 X 12 cm Australian Kangaroo Gold coin is the largest and the most valuable coin in the world. The nugget collection includes the second largest gold nugget in the world, which weighs over 25 kilograms.
Speaking of weights, you can even weigh yourself in gold at the Perth Mint. Create your very own medallion and get it engraved with a message of your choice; choose between medallions in base metals with gold or silver plating or in pure gold. You can even buy exotic souvenirs of your visit to the Perth Mint at the Perth Mint Shop in the Mint’s original Gold Receiving room.
